What multivitamin shall I buy?

Do you start the day with a multivitamin? People take multivitamins for various reasons. For some it is like insurance that covers the daily requirements of some vitamins and minerals. This is particularly vital for those on restricted diets or those who just don’t eat a healthy, well balanced diet. We eat more processed and synthetic food and still expect our bodies to function well. For others, that do eat a healthy diet, they take into consideration that our current food production methods have led to nutritionally depleted food.
What to look out for?

Supermarkets and Health Food shops provide a big range of multivitamins and deciding on the right product can be confusing.

  • Cheaper brands often provide only a fraction of the wide range of vitamins and minerals needed, and at levels that may be well below the recommended doses. So these provide very little benefit.
  • Some of the vitamins included are in a synthetic form such as Vitamin E ‘dl-alpha-Tocopheryl acetate’. For better value for your money and easier absorption by your body, ensure you buy Vitamin E consisting of d‑alpha-Tocopheryl acetate.
  • Absorption of minerals by the body depends on the form of the minerals. Calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide, for example, have lower absorption rates. Better quality options  for many would include calcium and magnesium citrate, and there are many other alternatives.

There is no one size fits all

We are all individuals and have different dietary requirements. Because a supplement is endorsed by a well-known sportsperson does not mean you will be as fit as them! Similarly the big economy size tub of multivitamins will probably not meet everybody’s needs in your family. Please feel free to contact me for further advice on choosing a suitable supplement.

Last but not least

Multivitamins are often taken with breakfast and washed down with a cup of tea or coffee. Caffeinated drinks decrease the absorption of minerals, in particular iron. Do yourself a favour. Allow for 1 hour between your multivitamin and your tea or coffee to get the most out of your supplement.
